Milwaukee, Wisconsin is one of those Midwest cities that surprises you—in the best way. Visiting here is at the top of every list of things to do in Wisconsin – and for good reason. Set on the shores of Lake Michigan, this Wisconsin gem blends historic charm with a modern, creative edge. It has serious craft beer credibility, a thriving arts scene, standout architecture, and a food culture that’s way more than cheese curds and brats (though those are definitely worth trying). Whether you’re into live music, lakefront strolls, or neighborhood cafés, you’ll find an endless array of things to do in Milwaukee and a vibe that’s both down-to-earth and exciting.

Whether you’re visiting on a couples getaway, a family vacation, a solo adventure, or business, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Milwaukee. Spend a morning at the Milwaukee Art Museum with its striking wings, or explore the Harley-Davidson Museum for a dose of Americana. The Historic Third Ward is packed with boutiques, galleries, and restaurants, while the Public Market is perfect for grazing your way through local flavors. Baseball fans can catch a Brewers game at American Family Field, and music lovers will find something to enjoy no matter the season—from jazz clubs to massive summer festivals.

For a more personal and memorable stay in Milwaukee, skip the big hotel chains and check in at one of Milwaukee’s small, independently owned inns. The Wisconsin Bed and Breakfasts, Inns, and Guesthouses that are affiliated with the Midwest Association of Independent Inns bring comfort, character, and hospitality together in just the right way. Whether you’re looking for a stylish urban guesthouse, a beautifully restored historic home, or a cozy, tucked-away escape in the suburbs of Milwaukee, you’ll find places that feel both special and welcoming—perfect for rounding out the ultimate Milwaukee getaway. Book your stay today!

Your Local’s Guide to the Best Things to do in Milwaukee

Culture, flavor, and plenty of fun: That’s what’s waiting for you in Milwaukee this year. If you’re looking for a vibrant city to visit in the Midwest, Milwaukee really should land at the top of your list. It’s a city with a strong sense of identity—historic, hardworking, and full of personality. From its lakefront setting to its distinct neighborhoods, Milwaukee allows you to enjoy a morning of museum-hopping, followed by a fantastic locally brewed beer in the afternoon, ending the day with live music or a sunset over Lake Michigan in the evening.

It has big-city energy without losing the welcoming, Midwestern vibe that makes exploring easy. Whether you’re into art, architecture, sports, food, or craft beverages, Milwaukee offers a variety of unique and interesting things to do. A rich German heritage pops up in everything from beer halls to summer festivals, but the city has evolved into something far more dynamic. You’ll find historic factories turned into foodie hotspots, quiet green spaces tucked between buzzing streets, and a local creative scene that brings out everything from forward-thinking cuisine to handmade goods at indie markets.

It’s easy to see why Milwaukee is a favorite for travelers who appreciate a city with character and plenty to do. It’s hard to narrow down our list, but we’ve curated a list of our 15 favorite things to do in Milwaukee below.

  1. No trip to Milwaukee is complete without a visit to the acclaimed Milwaukee Art Museum, and one look at the impressive winged architecture tells you why. It’s one of the best museums in the Midwest! Inside, you’ll find an outstanding collection of art to browse, all set in a scenic lakeside location.
  2. For a unique museum experience in Milwaukee, head to the Harley-Davidson Museum, where you can dive into the history of one of America’s most iconic brands through engaging exhibits and vintage bikes.
  3. One of our favorite things to do in Milwaukee is browse the streets of the Historic Third Ward. This vibrant neighborhood is packed with boutiques, galleries, cafes, and the Milwaukee Public Market.
  4. Grab a coffee, try local eats, or pick up artisan goods at the lively Milwaukee Public Market.  It’s not only about the food, though. This bustling community hub also hosts classes and events throughout the year.
  5. Are you a fan of craft beer? So is the entire state of Wisconsin – and the epicenter of our craft beer world is Milwaukee. Step inside Lakefront Brewery and enjoy this fun locally loved Wisconsin brewery. Take a tour, enjoy a beer, and have a fantastic afternoon.
  6. You’ll also want to add a tour of the Pabst Mansion to your itinerary. This stunning historic home is beautiful in its own right, but it was once owned by brewery royalty and has thus earned a spot on our list of unique things to do in Milwaukee.
  7. Milwaukee is anything but a concrete jungle, like many major cities. Given its lakeside location, it’s easy to enjoy a day on the water or at the beach, and there are also plenty of city parks to enjoy. We love Bradford Beach on the shores of Lake Michigan—it’s just minutes from downtown!
  8. Another great spot on the lake is the North Point Lighthouse. Climb to the top for panoramic views!
  9. Year after year and without question, the best things to do in Milwaukee revolve around events. From summertime traditions like Jazz in the Park to the multi-day Summerfest celebration, there’s always something fun on Milwaukee’s calendar!
  10. Are you looking for unique things to do in Milwaukee? Consider the Mitchell Park Domes. These climate-controlled domes offer a look at interesting tropical plants and desert landscapes and host a regular series of unique events.
  11. As the weather warms up, it’s a great time to rent a kayak or take a local kayaking tour – a fantastic way to experience a different side of Milwaukee!
  12. Art lovers, don’t miss Black Cat Alley. This hidden gem of an alley is one of the most fascinating things to do in Milwaukee. It’s filled with ever-changing street art and murals and is perfect for those Instagram-worthy vacation photos.
  13. For a casual walk with beautiful views, don’t miss a stroll down the Milwaukee Riverwalk. This pedestrian walkway stretches for about 20 city blocks and provides an easy connection between three major neighborhoods.
  14. If you’re a bird or nature lover, take the time to explore the stunning Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. The center has numerous hiking trails and an observation tower.
  15. Finally, with so many things to do in Milwaukee, you’ll need plenty of refueling options. Milwaukee’s eateries won’t disappoint! There are some sensational restaurants in Milwaukee, from James Beard Award-winning restaurants to casual pubs and diners.
