With stunning natural landscapes and some truly wonderful small towns in Minnesota, this diverse state offers some of the best of the Midwest each winter.

Minnesota is a true winter wonderland, where crisp air and snowy scenes create the perfect backdrop for a cozy retreat. And if you’re seeking outdoor excitement, you won’t be far from opportunities to ski, ice skate, or explore the state’s vast network of snow-covered trails. Combine your adventures with the warmth of local hospitality, and you’ll have an unforgettable winter getaway in the making.

cross-country skiing on a frozen lake - one of the best winter activities in Minnesota

The Best Winter Activities in Minnesota

Unlike some other destinations, Minnesota truly shines in the winter. We embrace the cold, chilly vibes of winter and simply bundle up and head outside for an exciting season of fun. Winter activities in Minnesota offer a mix of outdoor adventures and cozy indoor experiences that capture the best of the season.

Whether you’re drawn to the snow-covered landscapes or prefer exploring the state’s vibrant cities, there’s something for everyone in Minnesota. From scenic drives to thrilling winter sports, winter activities in Minnesota give travelers the chance to embrace the colder months with joy. Our local Innkeepers will also have plenty of personal insight into how to best enjoy their cities and towns, but below, we’ve highlighted some of the best winter activities to enjoy in Minnesota this year.

  1. One of the must-do winter activities in Minnesota is cross-country skiing. Minnesota’s Nordic heritage runs deep through our communities, so cross-country skiing is a popular and traditional winter pastime for Minnesotans. Few things beat gliding through snow-covered trails. You can do this just about anywhere in the state, but popular spots include places like Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis, Mt. Itasca Winter Sports Center, and the Red Wing Nordic Center.
  2. Another quintessential thing to do in Minnesota each winter is head to the lakes for some ice fishing. As the lakes freeze over, you’ll spot the signature winter shanties on frozen lakes all over the state. Popular places to search for winter fish include Mille Lacs Lake and Leech Lake.
  3. There’s some fantastic skiing in Minnesota, too – and not just the Nordic variety. If you’re into downhill skiing and Snowboarding, you’ll find some of the best skiing in the Midwest in Minnesota. Popular places include Lutsen Mountain, Spirit Mountain, and Welch Ski Area near Red Wing.
  4. If you’re looking for more adrenaline-packed winter activities in Minnesota, try snowmobiling. Ride through miles of well-maintained trails that crisscross the state, offering thrilling adventures through forests and fields. The views will be breathtaking.
  5. Winter hiking is another popular activity in Minnesota. From brisk walks to awe-inspiring snowshoeing at places like Gooseberry Falls State Park near Duluth, it’s one of the most popular things to do in the winter.
  6. There are plenty of sledding and tubing hills around Minnesota, too. Head to places like Elm Creek Park Reserve or Theodore Wirth Park’s tubing hills and enjoy some classic winter fun.
  7. Are you looking for unique winter activities in Minnesota? Try your hand at some dog sledding, particularly up north near Ely. It’s a great way to embrace adventure as you race through snow forests with a team of huskies.
  8. Fat tire biking is another great winter adventure, especially for biking enthusiasts out there. Fat tire bikes allow you to traverse snowy trails that would otherwise be unpassable on anything with wheels, and you can find suitable trails for this activity just about everywhere.
  9. If you need a break from all the wintry weather outside, consider warming up at one of the top Minnesota breweries. There are plenty of fantastic craft breweries in Minnesota, including popular choices like Surly Brewing Co. or Bent Paddle Brewing.
  10. Another great cold-weather activity, particularly for those who don’t love snowsports, is visiting one of Minnesota’s many fantastic museums. Minnesota is home to some of the best museums in the Midwest, including the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Bell Museum of Natural History in St. Paul, and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona.
