10 of the Most Haunted Places in Minnesota

Anoka, Minnesota, is considered by many to be the Halloween Capital of the world, as it’s rumored to be the original town to create modern Halloween traditions as they exist today. But October is about so much more than one day of Halloween celebrations. There are plenty of haunted places in Minnesota worth visiting this month (or any time of year).

Paranormal encounters have been recorded at various haunted places in Minnesota – where you can find authentic ghost stories and plenty of spine-chilling mysteries. We’ve listed what many consider to be ten of the most haunted places in Minnesota below, so you can start planning to frighten yourself.

  1. The famed First Avenue music venue in Minneapolis, where Prince himself once performed, is also known as one of the most haunted places in Minnesota. This former bus depot is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a young woman who hung herself in the bathroom when her beloved didn’t return home from the war.
  2. Another haunted spot in the Twin Cities area is the Mounds Theatre in St. Paul, which has been the frequent subject of paranormal TV shows and ghost-hunting investigations. There are supposedly three ghosts that make their presence known here, and there are ghost tours at the theatre each October.
  3. The Washington Street Bridge in Minneapolis, which has tragically been a hotspot for suicides, is considered one of the most haunted places in Minnesota. People crossing the bridge at night can hear phantom footsteps and can sometimes even feel an eerie presence.
  4. If you’ve ever boarded the historic William A. Irvin ship in Duluth, it probably won’t be a surprise that it’s considered one of the most haunted places in Minnesota. It gets transformed into a haunted ship every October and has been the subject of paranormal investigations over the years.
  5. While you’re in Duluth, make sure to visit the Enger Tower. Not only is the view from here amazing, but it’s also reported haunted by the ghost of a man who jumped from the tower more than 80 years ago.
  6. The St. James Hotel in Red Wing is known for its resident ghost and former hotel owner, Clara Lillyblad. She reportedly lingers on the third floor where she lived, giving guests and visitors plenty of fright.
  7.  The Warden’s House in Stillwater is haunted by Warden Henry Wolfer’s daughter, and she can sometimes be seen looking out of the windows.
  8. The Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl is considered not just one of the most haunted places in Minnesota but one of the most haunted cemeteries in the country. Tuberculosis patients who died at Shaw Hospital in the early 20th century were often buried here, and the forested surroundings make it extra spooky.
  9. The Anderson House Hotel in Wabasha is full of history, including plenty of haunted history. A former guest, who jumped to her death after her husband disappeared, reportedly makes frequent appearances.
  10. The West hills Orphanage in Owatonna is another haunted place in Minnesota worth visiting, where reports of strange experiences, mysterious cigar smoke, and moving objects are common.
