Welcome to the Biking Capital of America, centrally located in the heart of North America’s first Rails to Trails project! The Elroy-Sparta bike trail remains one of the most popular trails in the country. With three rock tunnels and five small towns along it’s 32.5 mile route, the trail is a favorite Wisconsin bicycling destination. The 32 mile railroad grade, which stretches across the Baraboo, Kickapoo, and LaCrosse Rivers, was formerly owned by the Northwestern Railroad.
Sparta offers a variety of attractions for all types of interest. Visit the Deke Slayton Memorial Space and Bicycle Museum while in town or head over to Memorial Park to find the new aquatic center, ball diamonds, tennis courts, ice rinks, hockey arena, playground, sheltered picnic area, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking on Beaver Creek, Perch Lake and the La Crosse River. Sparta also has a reputable 18-hole golf course and a 12-lane bowling center. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are popular in the winter months.
Antique shopping is a great way to pass the time, and you’ll enjoy the trove of treasures at Sparta’s New and Used Shop or Janusheske Antiques in Sparta. In nearby Cashton, Down a Country Road features six shops with wares from local Amish artisans. Other activities include motorcycling, horseback riding, and visiting tourist attractions. Ginny’s Cupboard on Water Street is a beautiful old-fashioned soda shop. The soda shop machine still runs, and you can also order an espresso, chai, or anything else. Locals love the soups, sandwiches, and desserts. And if you like generous portions of delicious food and great prices, the Sparta Family Restaurant won’t disappoint.
