Find a hotel, cabin, cottage or bed and breakfast in New Ulm, Minnesota

New Ulm, Minnesota 56073

New Ulm, Minnesota, is one of our favorite places for a couple’s getaway. When you visit this charming town, steeped in unique heritage, it will feel like you’ve stepped back into another place and time. New Ulm is a town shaped by its strong German heritage, with Bavarian-inspired architecture and a community that celebrates tradition year-round. Located in southern Minnesota along the Minnesota River, New Ulm really is one of the most charming weekend getaways in Minnesota.

There are plenty of things to do in New Ulm, which makes it easy to fill a weekend without rushing. Many visits begin at the Hermann Monument, where a climb to the top rewards couples with panoramic views of the river valley and the surrounding countryside. Downtown New Ulm invites exploration with its historic district, European-style storefronts, antique shops, and locally owned cafés that encourage lingering conversations. For those who enjoy art and storytelling, the Wanda Gág House offers an insightful stop that connects visitors to one of Minnesota’s most beloved creative figures.

New Ulm’s calendar is packed with events that give the town much of its personality. In March, Bock Fest at Schell’s Brewery brings together craft beer, music, bonfires, and winter traditions that feel festive and social while still appealing to adult travelers. Come October, Oktoberfest transforms the city with beer tents, live music, dancing, and traditional food, creating one of the most recognizable fall celebrations in the region and a popular time for couples’ getaways.

Outside of these events, a visit to the historic August Schell Brewing Company is essential, as it remains one of the oldest family-owned breweries in the country. Brewery tours and time in the beer garden with a Firebrick Vienna Lager or seasonal Märzen are highlights for many couples. Wine lovers often make time for Morgan Creek Vineyards, Minnesota’s only underground winery, where tastings are paired with wood-fired pizza in a setting that feels intimate and unexpected.

Dining options in New Ulm reflect both tradition and creativity. Lola, an American Bistro, is known for farm-focused dishes in a stylish yet relaxed setting. Turner Hall combines history and hearty German classics inside a former ballroom that feels full of character. Kaiserhoff is a favorite for schnitzel, bratwurst, and traditional fare served in a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Beyond festivals and dining, couples enjoy walking riverfront trails, visiting local museums, and exploring nearby parks and scenic overlooks. Everything feels close and approachable, which allows visitors to experience more without feeling overwhelmed. Whether you are planning a romantic getaway, celebrating a milestone, or searching for things to do in New Ulm, Minnesota, staying at a local bed and breakfast adds something personal to your getaway. We can’t wait to host you!
