Built in 1877, the inn was constructed as the family home of local entrepreneur Thomas H. Smith. The home itself was constructed by shipbuilders using notch and peg construction in typical shipbuilding fashion. It’s massive supporting timbers were undoubtedly from the Smith’s own lumberyard. The home was first converted into an inn in 1956. Thereafter it was purchased and used as a family home from 1960 until 1996. After major renovations in 1996, it was turned back into an inn, The Colonial Gardens Bed and Breakfast. It went through a handful of owners and managers until it’s purchase by it’s current owners Gabriel and Allana Gonzalez in February of 2022.
The Foxglove Inn captures the essence of the past and provides a private, relaxing atmosphere for the perfect getaway. All amenities and upgrades give the inn a fresh vintage feel while highlighting the details of this grand home. Each suite offers sitting areas by the cozy fireplaces, private bathrooms, most with large whirlpool or soaking tubs, comfortable king or queen beds with high quality linens and down comforters, free Wi-fi and cable. Each morning a hot, homemade breakfast is delivered to the guest rooms created with organic and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.
The inn is conveniently located on Historic 3rd Avenue in downtown Sturgeon Bay, making it an excellent location to walk to shops, restaurants, theater, galleries and the waterfront. It is warm, inviting, and comfortable, offering luxury.
It is a grand Victorian home overlooking the working waterfront to which it’s ties run deep. We are very proud of it’s history. Come and see why The Foxglove Inn is the place to stay while visiting beautiful Door County, Wisconsin.
