Though enjoying some time snowmobiling is certainly a favorite pastime for Wisconsinites, it’s only one of many extraordinary things to do in Wisconsin in winter (and beyond). With far fewer crowds in some of the top recreational areas of the country, winter is also a great time to enjoy the Badger State without the large crowds of summer.

Find the Best Wisconsin Snowmobiling Around the State

There’s no denying it. Winter in Wisconsin is synonymous not only with snow but with fun! A big part of that fun is heading out for adventure on the top Wisconsin Snowmobiling Trails around the state. Heading out to find new snowmobiling trails is a great way to explore the state and give yourself a little getaway while you’re at it.

Though some of the most famous Wisconsin snowmobiling trails are located in the rugged Northwoods of Wisconsin, including Eagle River, St. Germain, and Minocqua, there are many more delightful snowmobiling destinations worth considering. You can stay up to date with conditions on all local trails with Travel Wisconsin’s Snowmobile Snow Report.

Take a look at our recommendations below, and choose confidently, knowing each of these areas houses several lovely Wisconsin Bed and Breakfasts.

Northeastern Wisconsin

One of the best Wisconsin snowmobiling trails in the northeast is the Ahnapee State Trail in Door County. The trail is 48-miles long and connects the communities of Kewaunee and Sturgeon Bay. While you’re up there, you can also enjoy some snowmobiling and other winter sports at Potawatomi State Park. It offers beautiful views along the Niagara Escarpment. There are also miles of trails that run up the remainder of the door county peninsula and will surely provide you with a beautiful day (or more) worth of fun!

Northwestern Wisconsin

Head to the northwest corner of the state, where you’ll find more than 600 miles of groomed Wisconsin snowmobiling trails in Bayfield County. This area is known for having some of the best snow in the state. Popular snowmobiling trails include Trail 1 in Red cliff and the Moquah Barrens State Natural Area. Some great trails circle Lake Namakagon, part of the stunningly beautiful Chequamegon National Forest. This area is perfect for a variety of winter sports!

Central/Southwestern Wisconsin

Much like during the rest of the year, the rugged town of Wausau is an extraordinary place to enjoy a variety of winter sports, including, of course, snowmobiling. Wausau is home to 29 snowmobile clubs. There, you’ll find access to various incredible trails like the Mountain to Bay State Trail, which you could feasibly ride to Green Bay. In total, there are 790 miles of Wisconsin snowmobiling trails to ride here.

Head south towards the Wisconsin Dells, and you’ll find many delightful Wisconsin snowmobiling trails to explore, including the opportunity to glide through the beautiful Baraboo Bluffs. There are just over 200 miles of snowmobile trails in Sauk County, part of Wisconsin’s scenic Driftless Region.

A bit further west of the Baraboo area will take you to LaCrosse, Sparta, and Viroqua, also popular getaway towns with various Wisconsin snowmobiling trails to explore – not to mention plenty of opportunities for winter recreation. Some of the best trails in this area can be found at Kickapoo Valley Reserve, and there are more than 250 miles of trails in the greater Vernon County area.
