With so many incredible things to do in Duluth, there’s little reason to be bored – unless, of course, that is what you want from your getaway! Between exploring the state parks in the area, hiking, biking, and otherwise recreating outdoors, and even safely enjoying Duluth restaurants, breweries, and shops, there really are plenty of things to do in Duluth this spring. Here are just a few of our top recommendations:
- Take a hike! There are so many great ones to choose from. The Superior Hiking Trail is a great place to start, but other good choices include Oberg Mountain and Ely’s Peak, and the coastal trails on Park Point.
- If you aren’t up for a rigorous hike this spring but still want to enjoy the natural beauty of Duluth, head to Duluth’s Lakewalk.
- Visiting Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is one of the most popular things to do in Duluth. It’s about an hour north of downtown Duluth, but it’s one of the best-known (and most-photographed) landmarks in the state of Minnesota. As you head north towards this iconic park, enjoy the scenic drive along Scenic Hwy 61.
- Hike along the St. Louis River, and even cross it on the famed swinging bridge at Jay Cooke State Park.
- Take in the majestic beauty of the waterfalls at Tettagouche State Park and Gooseberry Falls State Park. These early spring months, as the snow begins to melt, is one of the best times to see these beautiful waterfalls.
- Spirit Mountain Ski Area is a very popular attraction during the winter, but the fun doesn’t stop there! Spirit Mountain is also home to some of the best mountain biking trails in the Duluth area, and the best part is these gravity trails are lift-served!
- Glensheen Mansion is open and offers daily self-guided tours that are COVID-safe, offering you a glimpse into one of Duluth’s most famous founding families.
- Visiting Duluth’s breweries is “must do” on the list of things to do in Duluth, and right now they’re offering covid-safe tasting experiences. By summer, when the patios are open and the warmth of the sun is shining down on us, these breweries will once again be a popular destination in town. Popular breweries to visit include Canal Park Brewing Company, Blacklist Ales, Ursa Minor Brewing, Hoops Brewing, Fitger’s Brewhouse, Lake Superior Brewing, and Bent Paddle Brewing Co.
- Explore Duluth’s Canal Park neighborhood, where you can watch ships pulling into Duluth’s harbor and under the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge (just as soon as the ice melts enough for shipping to resume!).
- It’ll still be a bit icy and cold out on Lake Superior for a while yet, but come May, Duluth’s Vista Fleet will once again be offering sightseeing cruises around Duluth’s picturesque harbor. They also plan to start offering their sunset dinner cruises by late-May as well!
