10 of the Best Duluth Hiking Trails For Fall
Hiking is one of the most popular things to do in Duluth, no matter the season. From spring through winter, Duluth hiking trails get plenty of use! There really are so many to choose from, too, which is great. Every time you step outside, new adventures are waiting.
With so many great Duluth hiking trails to choose from, it can be challenging to settle on one or two to tackle while you’re here. That’s where we come in! There are definitely a few “must-see” trails, like the famed Ely Peak. Here are 10 of our favorite Duluth hiking trails to consider this fall.
- The best of all the Duluth hiking trails is the Superior Hiking Trail, which offers 310 total miles of hiking from the Canadian Border south. You can do this trail all at once, but most people do segment hikes. Either way, you’ll follow the rocky ridges overlooking Lake Superior for the majority of your time on this trail.
- The Duluth Lakewalk is one of the most popular walking trails in Duluth, and also ranks as one of the easiest Duluth hiking trails. It winds along the shores of Lake Superior, starting in Canal Park, for 7.5 miles, eventually ending at Brighton Beach.
- Hiking up to Ely’s Peak really should be something you do at least once. The views from the top are breathtaking, especially at sunset. It’s also one of our favorite hikes to take in the fall.
- If you’re looking for great city views, check out Duluth’s Skyline Parkway. It’s popular, and also serves as an excellent connecting trail, as it traverses Duluth from one end of the city to the other.
- The Magney Snively Trailhead is a beautiful place to explore. The park encompasses 1,800 acres and a variety of habitats, including wetlands, uplands, and rocky outcrops. This fall, don’t miss the views from Bardon’s Peak.
- Duluth’s Lester Park is popular not just for mountain bikers, but hikers as well. The trails here also connect to those in Amity Park, which can further connect to other trails in the area, like the Skyline Parkway and the Superior Hiking Trail.
- If you want to enjoy a combination of beach and forest, then head to the Park Point Trailhead. It can be deceptively challenging, though, as much of the trail takes you through the sand. As you go, you’ll enjoy interesting views of the harbor, what’s left of the old-growth forest and settlers cabins, and the original lighthouse and entry into Duluth’s harbor.
- If you’re looking for a quick escape into nature while still in the city, we recommend Chester Creek Hiking Trail.
- It’s hard to talk about the best Duluth hiking trails without mentioning those found at Jay Cooke State Park. There are more than 50 trails in the park and it’s an exceptionally beautiful place to explore in the fall.
- Another great place to hike in the fall is at Gooseberry Falls State Park, just north of Duluth. As an added bonus, you’ll enjoy beautiful waterfalls while hiking around the park.
