The Best Bike Trails in Minnesota

Getting outside and enjoying nature is one of the most popular things to do in Minnesota. This summer, we invite you to explore every corner of our beautiful state. One of the best ways to do this is by bringing along your bike and hitting the many bike trails around the state.  Whether you want to explore some of the country’s best urban trails in Minneapolis/St. Paul, or want to ride through rural rails to trails, lush forest, and wild prairie, you’ll soon find that Minnesota is a cyclist’s dream destination.

In total, Minnesota is home to more than 4,000 miles of paved bike trails and even more miles of trails suitable for mountain and road biking. Here are a few of our favorite paved piking trails:

  1. The Root River State Trail is one of the most popular trails in the state of Minnesota, and for good reason. It’s located near the charming town of Lanesboro and offers an escape into some of the most beautiful natural scenery the state as to offer. This trail offers 42 miles of paved bike paths but connects up to other trails in the area, like the Harmony-Preston Valley StateTrail, which offers another 18 miles of biking.
  2. The Paul Bunyon State Trail is one of the longest trails in the state, offering 112 paves miles of biking. It travels along a former railroad route near Walker, Minnesota.
  3. Another ride to take in northern Minnesota is along the Heartland State Trail. It was one of the first rail-to-trail projects in the country and runs for 49 miles in the Walker, Minnesota area. It also offers connections to the North Country National Scenic Trail, the Shingobe Connection Trail, and the Paul Bunyon State Trail.
  4. Central Lakes State Trail offers 55 miles of paved bike trails, passing by several lakes and passing through a beautiful variety of natural habitat, including prairie and forested, rolling hills.
  5. Gitchi Gami State Trail, located near Duluth on the North Shore of Lake Superior, gives riders access to 25 miles of bike trails. It offers beautiful views of Lake Superior and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, and also serves as a connection between Split Rock Lighthouse area and Gooseberry Falls State Park.
  6. If you’re looking for urban biking, go explore the 51-mile Grand Rounds Scenic Byway in Minneapolis. It not only offers an amazing tour of the city, but it’s an incredibly beautiful ride through the city’s parks and popular attractions like Minnehaha Falls. There are 7 different segments that make up the trail. They are the Downtown Riverfront, Chain of Lakes, Minnehaha, Mississippi River Northeast, Victory Memorial, and Theodore Wirth sections.

Great Minnesota Mountain Biking Trails

If you’re looking for a little more adventure than these paved state trails offered, then we recommend heading into the rugged woods of Minnesota for a mountain biking adventure.  Some of the most popular mountain bike trails in Minnesota include:

  1. Duluth Traverse, an incredible 100-mile mountain bike trail system within the city of Duluth that combines many of Duluth’s top bike trails into one easy to access system.
  2. Spirit Mountain in Duluth, which offers the only lift service to downhill trails in the state.  They have four great mountain biking trails and is the state’s premier downhill mountain biking destination.
  3. Ride around the popular red-dirt trails and iron mines of Cuyuna. There are more than 30 miles of bike trails that are considered to be some of the best mountain biking in the state. Enjoy the views as you circle the pit mines which have since turned into lakes.
  4. Lebanon Hills is nearby to the Twin Cities area and features 12 miles of trails suitable for all varieties of riders. Another popular place for mountain biking in the area is Theodore Wirth Park.
  5. There are two mountain bike trails in the Winona area that are worth your time. They are the Holzinger and Cherry Hill trails and are considered to be some of the best mountain biking in the midwest.
