Most states have plenty of legends, myths, and lore, many of which involve haunted places and mysterious happenings. It gives us a bit of a fright to do so, but with Halloween just around the corner, we thought we’d share 10 of our favorite haunted places in Minnesota. - The Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul has long been considered one of the most haunted places in Minnesota, with a variety of unexplained things happening over the years and plenty of paranormal activity. Consensus attributes most of this activity to a former stagehand known as Ben
- Downtown Pipestone is filled with mysterious sounds of footsteps, flickering lights, disembodied children’s voices, and sudden drops in temperature. It’s so haunted that Pipestone Paranormal Weekend takes place in mid-October.
- St. James Hotel in Red Wing is known for its resident ghost, former hotel owner Clara Lillyblad. She reportedly lingers on the third floor where she lived and makes sure cutlery and napkins are correctly placed for diners.
- Wabasha Street Caves in St. Paul, located deep the city’s sandstone bluffs, is a haunted and creepy place to visit this October.
- There are rumored to be plenty of haunted spirits in the two-lane basement bowling alley at the renovated late-1800s Chase on the Lake hotel in Walker Minnesota. Ghosts are said to be soldiers who died in 1898’s Battle of Sugar Point, and maybe even a stable boy and aggressive characters from its lumberjack and Prohibition years.
- The Washington Street Bridge in Minneapolis, something of a hotspot for suicides is said to be haunted. People crossing the bridge at night can hear phantom footsteps and feel and eerie presence watching from the shadows.
- The Warden’s House in Stillwater is haunted by Warden Henry Wolfer’s daughter. She can sometimes be seen looking out of the windows.
- The Greyhound Bus Museum in Hibbing is another well-known haunted place in Minnesota. There’s a spirit there who loves to open and close the windows and doors of a bus, as well as other unexplained voices and shadows.
- Grey Cloud Island, where you’ll find the highest concentration of Native American burial mounds of anywhere in the United States, is a place steeped in haunted history. A variety of ghosts and spirits have been found here, some of which seem to take great offense to ghost hunters in the area!
- First Avenue in Minneapolis, a former music venue, has a tragic history that now leaves it marked as a haunted destination. A young woman who hung herself in the bathroom occasionally makes an appearance to unlucky guests, as does another spirit nicknamed “slippy.”
