Spring is Nearly Here: Let’s Discover Waterfalls in Wisconsin!

Spring in Wisconsin is one of the most anticipated seasons after a long, snowy winter. As the days get longer and the crisp sunshine brings new life, the snow melts, and rivers swell, feeding the waterfalls in Wisconsin and creating one of the most impressive natural shows in the Midwest. If you haven’t considered taking a tour of some of the best Wisconsin waterfalls, this is the season to change that. From roadside cascades to forested hiking trails to river gorges, discovering these natural beauties is such a lovely experience to add to your itinerary.

While many people might associate dramatic waterfalls more with mountainous states out west or along the East Coast, the best waterfalls in Wisconsin easily hold their own, especially during the spring in the Midwest when water levels are at their peak. Northern counties feature dense forests and rugged terrain, while central and southern regions offer scenic parks and surprising hidden gems. Whether you’re planning a dedicated day of waterfall sightings or adding a few stops to your weekend getaway plans, there are so many possibilities all over the state.

Outdoor adventures are best when you have a romantic Bed and Breakfast in Wisconsin as your home base. After a day on the trails, returning to a welcoming space with thoughtful hospitality, homemade breakfasts each morning, and personalized recommendations is a treat! It’s a refreshing alternative to a standard hotel stay, as your lodging becomes a bigger part of the journey versus just somewhere to sleep at night. The collection of Bed and Breakfasts in Wisconsin is impressive, and many are members of the Midwest Association of Independent Inns. Choose one of these B&Bs designed for couples seeking a quiet, romantic getaway, and book your lodging today!

Cascade Falls one of the best waterfalls in Wisconsin to add to your visit in Osceola

The Best Waterfalls in Wisconsin: Well-Known & Hidden Gems

Exploring the natural scenery is one of the best things to do in Wisconsin! There are more than 40 major waterfalls in Wisconsin, with the highest concentration in the northern part of the state. Iron County is often considered a hotspot, but you will also find incredible Wisconsin waterfalls in Marinette County, near Bayfield, around Hudson, and even south of Madison. Some falls are easily accessible and just steps from the parking area, while others offer sweeping river views after a short hike.

  1. Located at Pattison State Park near Superior, Big Manitou Falls is the tallest of all waterfalls in Wisconsin, plunging 165 feet into the Black River gorge. In spring in Wisconsin, the snowmelt creates a thunderous display that makes this one of the most dramatic natural attractions in the state.
  2. Also in northwestern Wisconsin, Amnicon Falls State Park features both upper and lower cascades along the Amnicon River. The park’s covered bridges and easy walking trails make it one of the best waterfalls in Wisconsin for a day’s adventure.
  3. Found at Willow River State Park near Hudson, Willow Falls spreads across a broad rock ledge in a series of impressive drops. It is especially striking during spring in Wisconsin when water volume is at its highest.
  4. Located along the St Croix River in Osceola, Cascade Falls is a picturesque roadside stop. In the evening, subtle lighting enhances the flowing water, adding a unique dimension to your Wisconsin waterfall tour.
  5. Near Wausau, this stretch of the Eau Claire River features a collection of cascading waterfalls framed by distinctive rock formations, known as the Dells of the Eau Claire. It is one of the most scenic and underrated waterfalls in central Wisconsin for those exploring the area.
  6. At Governor Dodge State Park west of Madison, Stephens Falls is one of the most accessible southern waterfalls in Wisconsin. A short walk leads to a beautiful stone bridge and cascading water, worlds away from city life.
  7. Near Copper Falls State Park, Lower Potato Falls is a powerful and wide cascade that is especially impressive in spring. Many visitors combine this stop with other nearby falls to create a full waterfall loop.
  8. Close to Bayfield, Lost Creek Falls drops over a moss-covered ledge in a quiet gorge. Visitors can even walk behind the waterfall, making it one of the more interactive waterfalls in Wisconsin.
  9. Near Mellon in the Bayfield area, Brownstone Falls is framed by reddish rock formations. Add a visit to Morgan Falls and Copper Falls for a well-rounded Wisconsin waterfall tour.
  10. Near Devil’s Lake State Park in Baraboo, Pewits Nest offers a dramatic gorge setting popular for hiking and photography in the Wisconsin Dells Region.

Create a Waterfall Loop in Marinette County

If you want to see multiple waterfalls in Wisconsin in one trip, Marinette County is known as the “Waterfall Capital of Wisconsin.” With 15 waterfalls located within a relatively compact area, it is easy to design a scenic waterfall loop that can fill an entire day or weekend.

Marinette County’s waterfall loop includes several memorable stops, each with its own character. Veterans Falls features three distinct cascades along the Thunder River, along with well-maintained walking trails that make exploring easy. Nearby, McClintock Falls showcases a lively series of rapids and pedestrian bridges that provide excellent viewing angles.

Strong Falls offers broad views of the Peshtigo River, creating a wide, powerful scene, while Long Slide Falls drops roughly 50 feet through a rocky chute that channels the water with impressive force. Just upstream, Smalley Falls is narrower but visually striking, and Dave’s Falls rounds out the experience as a smaller yet photogenic stop known for its rushing water and interesting rock formations.
