There are plenty of restaurants in St. Paul to choose from, each offering a refreshingly eclectic fusion of cultures, but always with a nod to our deep Midwestern roots.

At leading St. Paul restaurants, you’ll find everything from contemporary fine dining to street food-inspired spots and old-school neighborhood gems. These are the Best Restaurants in St. Paul This Year

Summer vacations are on the horizon, which means it’s time to start planning fun-filled itineraries across the Midwest. There are so many fantastic things to do in states as diverse as Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska. But one adventure we hope you find the time for this year is exploring the Twin Cities, particularly indulging at the many fine restaurants in St. Paul.

The city’s dining scene is a testament to its rich cultural heritage, with chefs drawing inspiration from Nordic roots, Hmong traditions, and contemporary American cuisine. Whether you’re savoring a meticulously crafted tasting menu or indulging in comfort food at a local eatery, restaurants in St. Paul provide a diverse and satisfying backdrop to your adventures in the Midwest. Below is a curated list of some of the best places to eat in St. Paul this year.

  1. If you love seeking out restaurants that have won James Beard Awards, or at least been nominated throughout the process, then don’t miss Myriel. It’s led by James Beard finalist Karyn Tomlinson and is an intimate spot offering French-inspired, hyperlocal dishes served on vintage china in a cozy setting. It’s in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul, and serves popular dishes like a super crispy-skinned duck breast and grilled oyster mushrooms, always highlighting ingredients from local farm partners.
  2. Another James Beard nod was given to Diane’s Place, where Chef Diane Moua brings Hmong-American flavors to the forefront, with dishes that beautifully reflect her heritage and culinary expertise. Don’t miss the house-made Hmong sausage, and for a sweet treat now or later, definitely try their house-made pastries.
  3. If you’re celebrating a special occasion like an anniversary or birthday, head to Meritage. It’s one of the most elegant St. Paul restaurants, offering sensational cocktails and inspired Parisian-influenced cuisine. Their famous pommes frites might just be the best in town, but their Oysters Meritage and perfectly-roasted duck are also popular menu favorites.
  4. Join us in dining with Iron Chef America winner Jason Sutherland, the head chef at the Handsome Hog. This is one of the only restaurants in St. Paul that showcases southern cuisine – an unusual thing this far north! Order anything with their house-smoked meats, and you’ll be a happy customer!
  5. If you’re looking for a charming, intimate dining experience at restaurants in St. Paul, don’t miss Joan’s in the Park. It’s also in the Highland Park neighborhood and is considered one of the city’s hidden gems. The four-course set menu is New American, and they also offer a wine pairing that perfectly complements the meal.
  6. Altera is a new gem among restaurants in St. Paul. It opened in 2024 and has already started making waves in this food-heavy market, thanks to its innovative dishes and stylish ambiance. The menu is extensive, with something for everyone, and everything is made from scratch. Don’t skip the chance to sip a delicious cocktail from their bar, too!
  7. Unassuming restaurants in St. Paul are sometimes our favorite, and Brunson’s Pub on Payne Avenue might be exactly that. Don’t let it fool you, though. The menu is hyper-local and seasonal, with everything made from scratch in-house. Their patio dining on a nice summer day makes the experience that much more enjoyable!
  8. If you find yourself in the Frogtown Neighborhood craving something unique, don’t miss Demera Ethiopian Restaurant. Though there’s plenty of meat on the menu, this also happens to be one of the best restaurants in St. Paul for vegetarians, thanks to hearty dishes like misir key wot, packed with red lentils.
  9. Cecil’s Deli, the oldest Jewish Delicatessen in town, will not disappoint. It’s a St. Paul Institution, and has been a food staple since the 1940s.
  10. If gorgeous patio dining appeals to you, one of the best in town is W.A. Frost and Company in Cathedral Hill. It’s one of the most romantic restaurants in St. Paul, with a hip and trendy interior and a delicious and inspired menu.
  11. If you’re looking for restaurants in St. Paul that offer great date night alternatives or a fantastic happy hour, consider heading to King Coil Spirits, a local distillery offering exceptional cocktails, small plates, and well-crafted Roman-style pizzas.
  12. For a casual but delicious lunch spot, consider heading to Razava Bakery. It offers artisanal breads like sourdough and challah, along with a menu packed with bagels, schmears, and delicious flatbreads.
  13. If you have a diverse group of eaters with you or just appreciate variety, don’t miss the Hmongtown Marketplace, a bustling food court featuring a range of Hmong and Southeast Asian vendors.
  14. Estelle’s is another fantastic option among restaurants in St. Paul that should be on your radar. The menu features things like homemade pasta, tapas, and inventive cocktails for a delicious meal from start to finish.
  15. Finally, give Owamni a try. This Indigenous-owned restaurant offers a decolonized dining experience with dishes rooted in Native American traditions, emphasizing local and seasonal ingredients.
