The Best Skiing in Wisconsin
There’s nowhere better than Granite Peak Ski Area when it comes to skiing in Wisconsin. Even so, there are plenty more places to enjoy a bit of skiing in Wisconsin, and what it boils down to is what kind of skier you are and where you want to spend your time.
If you’re interested in skiing in Wisconsin this winter, it’s best to plan in advance. Tickets are generally available online and should be purchased in advance when possible. Some ski areas have policies in place this year to limit crowds and ensure a safer and more enjoyable ski season throughout the 2021-2022 ski season.
As you settle in to enjoy the best this winter season has to offer, here are some places to consider for skiing in Wisconsin:
Granite Peak Ski Area
Granite Peak Ski Area, located in the north-central part of the state in Wausau, is Wisconsin’s premier ski resort. It’s the biggest ski resort in Wisconsin and is home to the tallest vertical drop not just in the state but in the Midwest (700 feet!). It also has a well-developed network of trails and lifts, with terrain suitable for all types of skiers.
Granite Peak opened for skiing in Wisconsin in late November, and thanks to plenty of natural snow and great snowmaking, the season generally lasts into April.
Cascade Mountain
In central Wisconsin near Madison, skiers and snowboarders will delight in the terrain at Cascade Mountain. This ski resort offers some of the best terrain parks in the Midwest, combined with nice long runs and beautiful night skiing.
Cascade Mountain offers 450 vertical feet of skiing in Wisconsin. They opened for the season in early December and generally stay open through March.
Devil’s Head
Another great central Wisconsin ski resort is Devil’s Head Resort. It’s located in the scenic Baraboo Hills near Devils Lake State Park. Not only does it offer great skiing in Wisconsin, with 500 feet of vertical drop, but it also offers breathtaking views of the Wisconsin River.
Devil’s Head is only 20 minutes from Cascade Mountain, too, which means if you stay in central Wisconsin this winter, you have two great Wisconsin ski resorts to enjoy at your leisure.
Mt. La Crosse
In the famously hilly driftless region of the state, you’ll find the steep slopes of Mt. La Crosse. With over 500 feet of vertical drop, this resort offers something a bit different when skiing in Wisconsin. Instead of long cruiser runs that you find at other Wisconsin ski resorts, you’ll find steep vertical on black diamond runs. It’s a great place to challenge yourself!
Christie Mountain
Near the city of Eau Claire, you’ll find the beautifully treed slopes of Christie Mountain. Aside from some great skiing here, especially in the trees, you’ll find a beautiful chalet at the top of the mountain that offers breathtaking views and a cozy space to take a break.
There’s a great variety of terrain here for skiers of all abilities, too, including a cliff jump for the ultra adventurous!
