Discover Waterfalls in Michigan on Your Next Adventure

Getting outdoors in the fresh air, stretching your legs on quiet wooded trails, and rounding the bend to see a spectacular cascade of water will be one of the most memorable parts of your next getaway in the Midwest. There’s a great selection of waterfalls in Michigan, all across the state. While the majority are located in the Upper Peninsula, you’ll find some fine examples in the Lower Peninsula as well. These falls are generally a bit smaller but still provide beautiful landscapes and hiking opportunities.

Most-Visited Upper Peninsula Waterfalls in Michigan

One of the most iconic waterfalls in Michigan is Tahquamenon Falls in Tahquamenon Falls State Park. The Upper Falls stretch nearly 200 feet across and drop about 50 feet, creating one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. Not far away, the Lower Falls feature a series of smaller cascades, surrounded by wooded islands that can be explored by canoe or rowboat. Insider tip: the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub is an excellent place for a microbrew before or after!

Another highlight is Munising Falls within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This beautiful 50-foot waterfall is just a short walk from the parking area and flows over a sandstone cliff into a peaceful gorge. Nearby, Miners Falls is another favorite stop, where a forest trail leads to an overlook above a powerful waterfall that plunges nearly 50 feet into the rocky canyon below.

Further west near Ironwood, visitors can explore the Black River Scenic Byway, which connects several waterfalls in one drive. Stops along the route include Great Conglomerate Falls, Potawatomi Falls, Gorge Falls, and Rainbow Falls, each offering viewing platforms and short trails that allow visitors to experience the Black River’s dramatic flow as it approaches Lake Superior.

Another beautiful stop is Bond Falls, located near the western edge of the Upper Peninsula but often included on regional waterfall tours. The falls spread across a series of rocky ledges, creating wide cascades surrounded by forest. A well-designed boardwalk trail offers multiple viewing platforms that provide different perspectives of the waterfall.

Lower Peninsula Waterfalls in Michigan

One of the best-known falls in the lower peninsula is Ocqueoc Falls, located in Ocqueoc Falls State Forest near Rogers City. This wide limestone cascade is the largest waterfall in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and features accessible walkways that allow visitors of all abilities to experience the falls. During warm weather, the shallow river area around the falls even becomes a popular spot for wading.

Irontone Springs is one of the smaller roadside waterfalls in Michigan, located just north of Gaylord along Old US 27 in Frank Wilkinson Park. While the cascade is modest, the natural spring creates a peaceful stop for travelers exploring northern Michigan. The surrounding forest and easy access make it a pleasant place to stretch your legs during a scenic drive.

Located southeast of Kalkaska, the Seven Bridges Recreation Area features several small waterfalls and flowing streams along its forested trails. The area is part of the Boardman River watershed and offers a quiet setting for hiking, fishing, and photography.

Iargo Springs sits along the Au Sable River near Oscoda and is reached by a long staircase that descends to a scenic observation deck. The spring itself creates a small waterfall as water flows from the hillside toward the river below. The overlook also provides beautiful views of the Au Sable River Valley, making it one of the more scenic stops in northern Lower Michigan.

Inside Ludington State Park, water flowing over the park’s dam creates a small but photogenic waterfall along the Big Sable River. The surrounding park is one of Michigan’s most popular outdoor destinations, known for the iconic Big Sable Point Lighthouse, hiking trails, dunes, and Lake Michigan beaches.
