Adding waterfall viewing to your time in Iowa is such a lovely addition to a romantic getaway. There’s something magical about finding these cascades around the bend on a hiking trail or scenic road stop. While Iowa might not have the highest concentration of waterfalls in Iowa, you’ll find some beautiful ones to keep on your list and some unique places to visit in Iowa overall!

Here are some must-see waterfalls in Iowa:

  1. As we mentioned above, Dunning Springs is the most iconic waterfall. It’s one of the best things to do in Decorah. Head across the stone bridge, then follow the steps upward to see where Dunning’s Spring begins. Just to the right of the bridge, a steep trail climbs the hillside and connects with several paths that run above Ice Cave Road.
  2. Not far from Dunning Springs is another beautiful waterfall known as Siewers Spring. This is a popular spot at the Decorah Fish Hatchery, where you’ll also find more things to do, including trout fishing, touring the outdoor sculptures, and exploring the Trout Run Trail on foot or by bike.
  3. Also, in the Decorah area, Malanaphy Springs State Preserve is another scenic spot where water flows from a hillside spring into a peaceful stream below. A hiking trail leads visitors through woodland and prairie landscapes. Many enjoy kayaking here!
  4. In Pikes Peak State Park, visitors can hike a short wooded trail to Bridal Veil Falls, one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iowa. The trail passes through forest and along limestone bluffs before reaching the waterfall, which spills down the cliff face. The park also features breathtaking overlooks of the Mississippi River, making it one of the most scenic things to see in Iowa. A short hiking trail leads visitors through the forest before reaching the falls.
  5. At Union Grove State Park in north central Iowa, visitors can find a small but charming waterfall along the park’s trails. The surrounding forest and quiet lake create a peaceful atmosphere, making this a great place for a relaxing walk. These are some of the best hiking trails in Iowa, with waterfalls, and parks like Union Grove offer a nice combination of natural beauty and accessible trails.
  6. Head to Wildcat Den State Park near Muscatine. Here, visitors can discover Devil’s Punch Bowl, a unique rock formation where water flows into a deep natural basin surrounded by sandstone cliffs. The park’s rugged terrain and historic structures make it a fascinating place to explore.
  7. Another hidden gem is Dolliver Memorial State Park near Fort Dodge, where water flows through narrow sandstone canyons and over small rock ledges along the park’s scenic trails. While the waterfalls here are subtle, the dramatic rock formations and wooded ravines create a beautiful landscape.
