Go Apple Picking in Wisconsin This Fall

Unlike the shorter window of time to enjoy fall colors in Wisconsin, the season for apple picking in Wisconsin is a long one. Orchards usually open up for visitors around Labor Day, and apple picking in Wisconsin continues well into November and sometimes through Thanksgiving.

There are plenty of orchards around the state where you can go apple picking in Wisconsin. Below, we’ve compiled a list of twelve different ones, each in a different part of the state and all nearby to one of our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfasts.

  1. Gays Mills, Wisconsin, is arguably the apple-picking capital of Wisconsin. Accordingly, it’s home to a variety of delightful orchards, like Turkey Ridge Organic Orchard.
  2. There is perhaps nothing more delicious in the fall than apple cider donuts, and you can enjoy one – along with some apple picking in Wisconsin, at Erickson’s Orchard in Bayfield. They have a well-earned reputation and a “can’t miss” of things to do in Wisconsin this fall.
  3. If you plan to enjoy the magnificent Door County Fall colors this fall, don’t miss a visit to Wood Orchard Market in Egg Harbor. They specialize in Honeycrisp apples and also have an extraordinary market to explore!
  4. Epelgaarden in Fitchburg is a classic old-fashioned orchard where you can enjoy an excellent afternoon of apple picking in Wisconsin. The experience gets even better on Sundays when there is live folk and bluegrass music to enjoy.
  5. Pick from one of the 60,000 trees at Sacia Orchards in Galesville, and before you leave, don’t forget to grab one of their legendary pies.
  6. Brightonwoods Orchard features over 200 varieties of apples, which makes it an incredible place to go apple picking in Wisconsin! You can combine this trip with a bit of wine tasting, as the Aeppel Trow Winery is onsite!
  7. There’s more than just apples to pick at Ten Eyck Orchard in Brodhead, Wisconsin. There are 40 acres of pears and plums to delight in as well.
  8. Apple Holler near Racine is open year-round and is the perfect place to enjoy some apple picking in Wisconsin in the fall.
  9. Head to Sprangers Orchard in Kaukana, and enjoy a delicious afternoon of apple picking.
  10. If you’re looking for Wisconsin’s world-famous apple pie in a bag, head to The Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago. There’s so much to keep you busy here, and the apple picking in Wisconsin is just the beginning.
  11. Pick your own apples, enjoy delicious baked goods, and get yourself lost in the maze at Helene’s Hilltop Orchard in Merrill, Wisconsin.
  12. Enjoy some apple picking in Wisconsin at the beautiful Shihata’s Orchard, located in the picturesque bluffs of the Mississippi River valley in Prairie du Chien.

More Harvest Fun at Wisconsin Wineries This Fall

As fun as apple picking in Wisconsin is, it’s not the only great way to enjoy fall in this incredible state. Fall in Wisconsin is also the perfect season to head to Wisconsin wineries. Most of the wine produced at Wisconsin wineries are cold-hardy grapes – the kind that thrives in the typically harsh winters of the midwest. There are more than 80 Wisconsin wineries positioned around the state producing a delightful range of wines from these grapes, and this fall is the perfect chance to visit them.

Below, we’ve featured just ten of these fantastic Wisconsin wineries, some in the northern reaches of the states, while others are spread out centrally down to the southern part of Wisconsin.

  1. Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac is one of the most well-known Wisconsin wineries. It was first established in the 1840s and is a beautiful place to enjoy a taste of fall in Wisconsin.
  2. Cedar Creek Winery, which Wollersheim Winery owns, is located in Cedarburg in a beautiful historic building and is a charming place to enjoy a relaxing afternoon.
  3. For those heading to Door County this fall, don’t miss a tasting at Harbor Ridge Winery. They have a diverse selection of award-winning wines, and their beautiful setting makes this one of the best Wisconsin wineries to visit this fall.
  4. Trout Springs Winery is small but worth visiting. It’s located outside Green Bay and was recently considered one of the best Wisconsin Wineries, as voted by the Wisconsin Grape Growers Association.
  5. The Chateau St. Croix Winery in St. Croix Falls is one of the most beautiful Wisconsin wineries – and it gets even more in the fall. Enjoy their 30-minute tour, sample some of their best wine, or relax in their state-of-the-art tasting room.
  6. At North Leaf Winery in Milton, you can taste the wine and tour the facility where they make, bottle, and sell it.
  7. Belle Vinez, which translates to beautiful vines, is a family-run winery near the town of River Falls in northern Wisconsin. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy a bit of fall in Wisconsin.
  8. While enjoying the beautiful fall colors at Devils Lake State Park, take some time to yourself and enjoy a tasting at Baraboo Bluff Winery. The views at this Wisconsin winery are spectacular!
  9. Located just south of La Crosse, you’ll find Branches Winery in the charming town of Westby. Their wines are crafted from 10 varietals of cold-hearty grapes and other fruits, producing a flavor combination you won’t find at any other Wisconsin wineries.
  10. Vernon Vineyards, another winery in the La Crosse area, embraces the meaning of locally grown. Their wine is made from grapes grown only in their private vineyard in the Driftless Region of Wisconsin.

Apple picking in Wisconsin and wine tasting at top Wisconsin wineries – is there any better way to enjoy a fall getaway? The only thing that can make these quintessential fall activities better is by spending a few days at one (or more) of our #1-rated Wisconsin Bed and Breakfasts.
